CT-Fest, Tobacco Dock, London, UK

Project type: Temporary installation
What we did: Sound design and music composition
Date: 2024-25
Client: The Mill

We worked with The Mill to create three soundscapes and additional sound effects for a stunning 30m-wide animated winter wonderland, where audio and visuals collide in real time. This was one of the key features at CT-Fest at Tobacco Dock in London, a mini-festival showcasing the latest in cutting edge audio-visual technology.

Each soundscape was part of a family, which could segue and overlap with common tones and keys. It was designed to play over a bespoke 5.1 audio system, mixed on site using Dante to live stream into the audio system, ensuring the sounds and levels weren’t overpowering the other displays on the very open exhibition floor

The magic happened when you lifted and shook a physical snow globe - each movement triggers a unique soundscape and alters the generative snow in the animation in real-time. Flipping the globe 180 degrees even makes the snow fall upside-down! The scene was built in Unreal Engine and audio was controlled using TouchDesigner and TouchOSC.

The sound could move across the entire length of the screen, so specific sounds could be spatialised and pinpointed, making it feel more real.
